How we calculate some trend metrics is changing soon

This will make it easier to understand which colors, fabrics, prints, and product details are gaining or losing popularity within a specific product type, helping you identify opportunities and make more informed decisions.

To start, let's clarify a few concepts

This update will affect shape crossings. A shape is a main silhouette within a category, such as Jumpers within Tops or Ballerinas within Dress Shoes. A shape crossing combines a shape with a color, print, fabric, or other attribute - e.g. Turtleneck Jumpers or Red Ballerinas.

Before and after

Until now, we have calculated a trend signal for a shape crossing by taking into account the volume of its broad category. This means that a shift in the overall volume of a shape can affect the signals of crossings under it - if Bare Shoulder Tops is declining, it can pull down signals for many crossings of Bare Shoulder Tops.

Going forward, this signal will be calculated relative to the volume of the shape itself. The signals will reflect what's happening purely within the shape's universe, independently of broader shifts in the shape's overall market.

For example: Red Bare Shoulder Tops or Cropped Bare Shoulder Tops will be measured relative to the total volume of Bare Shoulder Tops. This means that if Bare Shoulder Tops overall are declining, that decline will no longer affect the metrics of its crossings.

What will it mean for my data?

The underlying data won't change - we will still be using the same images, same volume, same panels. What will change is how we compute and present the signal. As a result, some metrics you are tracking may look different. Crossings that previously appeared to be declining or growing may show a more stable signal. This won't be the market changing overnight, but rather our lens getting sharper.

We're excited about this change and confident it will make your insights easier to act on!
